johnny dollar's vault

retro pop culture and various local observations and ramblings.

My Photo
Name:
Location: Baltimore, Maryland, United States
johnny dollar's vault resides in the basement of stately dollar maisonTM, amongst the wine cellar, tiki bar, and finicky electrical panel. from time to time i will unearth various artifacts from either there or from the random crevices of my mind.

please visit the new and improved pig cookin' post!

NOTE: this blog will NOT deal with any recent pop culture (i.e. since about 1990) or topical issues, so if you're looking for discussion about britney baracko jacko flacco, look elsewhere, lol

bomb everything

i was working on a little idear of mine and came across this image circa 1969 from a site called vietnampix.
the stickers read 'bomb hanoi now..." "bomb disneyland now..." "bomb everything..."
how's that for gallows humour?

porky the litter eater redux

i can't believe this ~ there is this feature in a park near where i grew up in bethesda called "porky the litter eater." it is easily from the 1960's if not earlier. it is essentially a vaccum cleaner attached to a fiberglass pig face, and it exhorts passersby to feed it trash.

some creative feller has recorded the audio from porky and done kind of a rap-lite to it. not that i would put this on permanent rotation on the j-pod, but at least you get to hear what good old porky has to say.

hear it heeeeeeeeeeeeer (you have to hit the play button on the music thingie)

mixology, 70's style: i'm a SoCorpio..

perhaps a good example of misguided marketing from the 70s: i inherited this pamphlet from my parents when they gave me their 1960 portable bar. it looks like it was an insert in a magazine.

i display this prominently in my house coz it makes me warm and fuzzy in an abba-esque way, and also coz the notion of making all these drinks with soco kind of makes me gag. in an abba-esque way.

hot buttered comfort... eww...

do you need a fridge? git yourself down to honest dollar's refrigerator warehouse UPDATED

i was gonna throw this up on craigslist, but i thought i would extend this offa to my loyal readers (or royal leaders) foist.
this is still available.

what you got here (kicks tire) is a circa 1980's white-westinghouse frost-free refrigerator, 28" wide x 64" high x 29" deep. works swell. ya wannit? lemmy know.

it is quite well suited to chillin yer beverage, man.

the next one is a little weirder.

the other is a circa 1940 "frigidaire by general motors," 27" wide x 55" high x 25" deep. it worked when we got it but the pot metal upper hinge broke, so it has been sitting ever since. i suppose a smart person could get a new hinge fabricated. i haven't been smart guy in that regard.

you know anyone who restores fridges? are you macgyver? no offer too low ~ i mean it.

hons in hawaii part 1

as you may know, this weekend is honfest, and i'm kind of ambivalent about it ~ i'm not saying the event has jumped the shark, but it is standing firmly on the shark's head.

whatever ~ to push the non-corporate sponsorship needle more in the right direction, here is a selection of photos from the 1971 vacation of a bunch of authentic hons in hawaii. pix were acquired in hampden years ago. enjoy, hon!

cocktail time, mabel!

wayyy more style than home depot

i guess it's pretty clear that i'm obsessed with the archival online photos courtesy of the maryland historical society... this image above just sticks in my head as the coolest freaking place imaginable to buy my toobafours.

the photo is from 1946, apparently it was surplus war materials. the location is fallsway and monument st - judging from another photo, lookin like pretty much where the new our daily bread building is.

i love the deco lines and the huge sawblade. it looks alot like the skarie sign on howard street. skarrrie!

LOL-playing vinyl record

like any interweb idear, things get played out pretty fast. i was finding lolcats amusing, yet had no real inclination to join into the fray until this idear popped up~

it's the combination of the aforementioned phenomenon and another hobby of mine, LP record album covers. in this case it's the supreme 1955 'mambo for cats' cover by jim flora.
you will either be:
1) lol!
2) wtf?
3) meh.

mr. belvedere, circa 1957; UPDATED

freaking cool! i've always been fascinated with time capsules.
