johnny dollar's vault
retro pop culture and various local observations and ramblings.
johnny dollar's vault resides in the basement of stately dollar maisonTM, amongst the wine cellar, tiki bar, and finicky electrical panel. from time to time i will unearth various artifacts from either there or from the random crevices of my mind.
please visit the new and improved pig cookin' post!
NOTE: this blog will NOT deal with any recent pop culture (i.e. since about 1990) or topical issues, so if you're looking for discussion about britney baracko jacko flacco, look elsewhere, lol

an original modern chair score
it is perhaps no secret that i am a modern furniture nerd.
and i have no business buying more furniture right about now.
but dig, i could not pass this up. what seems like an original eames plywood (DCW) chair, obviously for an institutional use, found adjacent to the waverly farmer's market this morning. upon further input from knowledgeable sources, we found that it is a THONET chair, which was contemporary with eames, and perhaps even inspiratory to - ? and we thought we were only buying fruit for pie.
wot makes it the cooler is that it is not only from this town, but from an institution not more than a couple miles from me ~ sinai hospital.
the still extant shipping thingie sez:
from THONET INDUSTRIES INC
ONE PARK AVENUE - NEW YORK 16, NY
R. Mars, The Contract Co.
112 W. Lombard St.
Baltimore 1, Md.
#6167-68 For: Sinai Hospital
hell yeah! and since the above has no zip code, we can be assured that this chair's vintage is from at least 1963. the zone codes above were apparently implemented for larger cities from 1943 until the 60s.

the brass plaque on the back ain't too bad neither.
all in all, a pretty sweet score and relatively affordable to boot.
