johnny dollar's vault

retro pop culture and various local observations and ramblings.

My Photo
Name:
Location: Baltimore, Maryland, United States
johnny dollar's vault resides in the basement of stately dollar maisonTM, amongst the wine cellar, tiki bar, and finicky electrical panel. from time to time i will unearth various artifacts from either there or from the random crevices of my mind.

please visit the new and improved pig cookin' post!

NOTE: this blog will NOT deal with any recent pop culture (i.e. since about 1990) or topical issues, so if you're looking for discussion about britney baracko jacko flacco, look elsewhere, lol

the adventures of natty boh on the left coast

a loyal (?) reader of this-here blog happens to live in callie-forni-ay and happens to be the head bartender at the "forbidden island" tiki bar in alameda.

so when he implored me to bequeath upon him some natty boh, i thot, sure, that would be some great blog fodder, pix of natty boh in a tiki bar! so i abused the u.s. postal system by sending him a can of said elixir.

turns out his cousin "clem" absconded with the boh and whilst enjoying, provided us with the following images of a californian's rendition of natty boh enjoyment.

enjoy!

no more boh for clem!

n.b. - said bartender met john waters a week later ~ too bad he didn't have more boh to offer him.

some kid junk

don't let the smooth taste fool yuh, i actually, per the title of this blog, have a basement full of random stuff. witness the above - i don't know why for sure i gathered these things, but i was looking for something else and they just started ending up in a pile.

wot you see are all ephemera from establishments that i frequented when a wee lad growing up in the washington d.c. area. lots of them are gone.
1. el torito mexican restaurant. hasta la vista.
2. gino's. wacked.
3. putt-putt golf and games. GAME OVER! wah.
4. woolworth's. gonzo.
5. shakey's pizza. are they still around? this particular one became a hooters, lol. a great place to be a salami sergeant these days i'm sure.

hot rod hula hop 3 in review: hot cars, tiki bars, fez-wearing bizarres

you may recall some minor bleat about the hot rod hula hop in columbus, ohio. this is an annual event put on by the fraternal order of moai, whose world headquarters is based in columbus, ohio. the following images are jest a smattering of the overall event, but hopefully will give you some of the flayva.

one great opportunity was to visit the secret burial ground of one of the two original moai that guarded the entrance to the tragically-gone kahiki restaurant.

you maniacs! you blew it up! ah, damn you! god damn you all to hell!

the first nite featured the "feast of the tiki gods" at the tropical bistro, which is a smaller direct descendent of the kahiki. drinks and food are of the same lineage, albeit in a more modest setting.

roast chinese pig!!!

f.o.m. member leilani provided authentic hula moves, accompanied by tropical bistro hawaiian guitarist francis llacuna.

i was so wowed that i had a smoking eruption! lol

volcano bowls were a-flowin...

fisherman from new york was a-playin... (both nites)

saturday was the hot rod part at the lot outside largo's. this classic rod was the most cherry.

this hot rod was the most evil...

rat fink!

the most tikiest hot rod!

it would take a whole other post to describe the wackiness going on aside from the car show: vendors, some guy trying to set the hula hoop world record, rollergirls, etc. etc...
the evening shows included bands such as lucky 7 and my fave rave surf band the madeira... there was dancin' girls, a fire dancer, greasers, fezzes, hawaiian shirts... geez i have to end it there. just go next year fer cryin' out loud.

gentlemen prefer haines

much to my better half's chagrin, i have gotten hooked on watching old commercials on youtube. this one is particularly zeitgeisty... what was up with the 80's quasi 1920'ness?
