johnny dollar's vault

retro pop culture and various local observations and ramblings.

My Photo
Location: Baltimore, Maryland, United States
johnny dollar's vault resides in the basement of stately dollar maisonTM, amongst the wine cellar, tiki bar, and finicky electrical panel. from time to time i will unearth various artifacts from either there or from the random crevices of my mind.

please visit the new and improved pig cookin' post!

NOTE: this blog will NOT deal with any recent pop culture (i.e. since about 1990) or topical issues, so if you're looking for discussion about britney baracko jacko flacco, look elsewhere, lol

"movie monsters,"1975: bag your face

when i was like in first to third grade, we had this thing in school where you were given these "scholastic books" pamphlets and if your parents let you and gave you bucks, you could order book(s) through it.

i dunno if it was me or my brothers who ordered this book, but i recall it being an important part of our kid library.

it's "movie monsters," published 1975, by alan ormsby. apparently this feller is now a big horror movie guy and also obviously a great illustrator as he drew all the enclosed drawings.

i thought that for a kid publication, it was informative and engaging.

the following always intrigued me, although i don't think i ever made one: make your own bag head frankenstien monster haid!

i vividly recall my brother making the above annotation on the finished product with my fisher-price typewriter. the logic behind the annotation, however, is vague...

zombies on a plane

don't let the crappy cover art fool ya, this straight-to-video movie (flight of the living dead) viewed this weekend is pound for pwnd more clever and more entertaining than snakes on a plane ever was.

there's no samuel l. jackson, but the Black Guy in this case is a more-buff tiger woods clone. digital effects are snappy and the low budgetedness of it makes it more fun, not a chore to peep.
dunno if it's on netflix, but if it is, it's highly recommended cheese food.

dahlias are way cool

we planted some this year and they exploded!

i'm not a flower guy per se, but any flower that was eaten by aztecs and lent the name to a classic murder mystery can't take too much of a hit off of my macho-meter. just sayin'.

meine grosse fahrt*

well i done been back from travails for about a week, and have finally dragged my internets hiney to post some highlight pix:

drank some beer at oktoberfest. mmm... beer as big as your head...

observed the burger king "angry whopper" ad compaign. what makes german whoppers angry has yet to be determined.

ate some pig.

saw some beermaids on trailers...

ate some OX.

drank some more beer as big as my head...

drank a fogcutter at trader vic's...

saw the art of schmuck

"please defend yourself from refrigerator attack by throwing spears"

guess angerhangover was here...

pet a kitty
btw "katzenjammer" in german means "hangover," but literally means "cats howling."

saw the terminator sword!!!

more cowbell!

it would have been a sad trip without at least one 'verboten' sign.

visited castle wolfenstein...

this must be the haus they keep the rats in...

gas stations: the perfect place to purchase jagermeister.

and, this st. bernard perfectly expresses my physical state at the end of the trip. the fact that he lives at a brewery might provide you with further insight.

*"my big trip" in german. seriously

mr. ray's hair weave redux

i never saw this version, as the commercial for the d.c. area was less 80's and had the voice over by mr. ray himself.

but you must dig the 80's-ness and the localness.

spanks to thighmaster for the 411...

please stand by, we are experiencing technical difficulties

one or two of the three people who read this blog have told me that the pictures do not load at all, or only load halfway. wot? if you have the 30 seconds to spare, please let me know if this blog loads for you all right. i figure i want to fix things before devoting lots of time to further posts. if you are techno-person, could you surmise why this might be happening?
